This American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy document highlights the value of a diverse and equitable workforce. Patients benefit through more culturally attuned care that fosters understanding and better outcomes while the gastroenterology community is strengthened through a breadth of perspectives and experiences that drive excellence.
In recent years, the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion have become increasingly polarized. Yet, we recognize these as essential drivers of both higher-quality patient care and a more resilient and effective professional community. This document was created to inform the society and broader medical community about the significant role these principles play in how we learn and practice medicine.

This society document provides a framework for examining the composition of the gastroenterology workforce in relation to the patient populations it serves while showing how diversity, equity, and inclusion influence clinical outcomes. The hope is that this document will also assist endoscopists in the treatment of patients who may have a different gender, race, or sexual orientation.
