Fifty years of ERCP: a personal review

The focus of this article is on how endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) started, how it has evolved over a 50-year period, and the current challenges related to it.

Writing this article was important because not many people share this vast 50-year experience with this procedure. This personal review will provide useful background information for those who are now in the trenches or for those who are thinking about training in ERCP.
