Mastering the art and skill of critiquing a scientific paper is one of the foundations toward becoming a successful researcher. Mentors play a critical role in training the next generation of reviewers and researchers and improving the quality of our peer-review process. We would like to acknowledge the GIE peer-review mentors for 2016-2017 for generously sharing their time and expertise.

Some comments from 2016-2017 mentees:
“In general, the feedback was excellent and to every single review during the year, there were constructive comments from the mentor…it has been a privilege to take part of the program…thank you very much for an exciting year. It has been a great inspiration. If you need a mentor in a year or two, I will be happy to contribute…Maybe, you could add a small online course or test with statistical matters in papers. Sometimes, I’m really in doubt how to comment on statistical concerns.”
What did you find useful with the program? –“Availability of mentor to guide through the review process.” What could be improved? – “Email communication has its own limitations. Additional phone or Skype communication will be useful for mentees to discuss more complex questions.”
“Reviewing manuscripts submitted to GIE was a great opportunity. Accessing other reviewer’s comments was also extremely interesting and allows to improve the quality of my own reviews…I would definitely recommend this program to a colleague…An improvement would be to focus the reviewed papers on the main research topic of the mentee.”
“It was a pleasure to act as a Reviewer for GIE through this Mentor Mentee Program. With the help of this program I was able to learn the art of reviewing from my respected Mentor…the guide for reviewers was very helpful as suggested…Yes, I would definitely recommend this program to my colleagues and juniors…I would like to suggest that once the mentee submits the article and the handling editor finds some deficiencies; that can be sent to the Mentee as there is always a scope for improvement…On a scale of 5, I would give full 5 marks to the Program and congratulate and thank all the members of GIE and ASGE involved in this program.”
