We evaluated the use of EUS-guided gastroenteric anastomoses for patients with benign gastric outlet obstruction (GOO). We wanted to see if patients were able to successfully avoid surgery using this method.

We believe that many patients with benign gastric outlet obstruction undergo surgery that may be unnecessary if they were given sufficient time for their GOO to resolve. EUS-guided gastroenteric anastomosis is a recently invented method of bypassing an obstruction, and as such we wanted to see if it could successfully be used as a temporizing method while awaiting GOO resolution.

Our method was highly effective in helping patients avoid surgery with a very low rate of recurrent GOO after the EUS-guided gastroenteric anastomotic stent was removed. Future studies should be conducted in a randomized fashion, comparing early surgery to EUS-guided anastomosis as a temporizing method.
