CapsoCam SV is a new small bowel capsule with “panoramic view,” wire-free technology, and a long-lasting battery life. It is equipped with 4 high-frame rate cameras, resulting in a high number of acquired frames. In two previous pilot studies, CapsoCam SV showed comparable operative and diagnostic performance with frontal view small bowel capsules [Friedrich K, et al. J Gastroenterol Hepatol 2013; Pioche M, et al. Endoscopy 2014].

We conducted the first multicenter study to assess the performances and the safety profile of the 360 panoramic-view capsule in a large series of patients from a multicenter clinical practice setting. Between 2011 and 2015, we included 172 consecutive patients undergoing a 360 panoramic-view capsule procedure in 7 European Institutions. Both technical (i.e., technical failures, completion rate) and clinical (i.e., indication, findings, retention rate, diagnostic yield) results were at least similar to those reported by previous studies based on forward-view small bowel capsule. The lateral panoramic view was particularly effective in scoping some areas of the GI tract (i.e., the proximal small bowel and the upper GI tract), as well as for the visualization of flat diminutive lesions, such as vascular findings.

This first multicenter study conducted in routine clinical practice with the largest series of CapsoCam SV collected so far, confirms that the first prototype of a panoramic vision capsule is safe and provides clinical and technical performances similar to those reported in the literature with frontal-view small bowel capsules. After ongoing technical improvements of the CapsoCam SV system have been achieved, larger studies, possibly with head-to-head comparison with the most recently released frontal-view cameras, are warranted.
