New updates from ORCID

Keep your ORCID record up-to-date—automatically!

So you’ve registered for your ORCID iD but what should you do next? How do you link information or customize your ORCID account? In collaboration with CrossRef and DataCite, ORCID  has recently launched a new Auto-Update functionality that enables ORCID iDs to automatically be added to your account. This is exciting news for researchers because you will no longer have to manually maintain your ORCID record, individually adding published works.

When you include your ORCID iD during manuscript submission, the metadata stays with the article throughout the publication process and is included in the information submitted to CrossRef, the nonprofit organization that issues DOIs for publications. When this information is received, CrossRef can automatically share your article’s title, publication date, and DOI with your ORCID record.

ORCID strives to ensure that researchers maintain full control over their accounts, so you have the ability to authorize CrossRef and DataCite to update your ORCID record and can revoke this permission at any time.

Authorize organizations to push information to your ORCID account

Steps to remember:

  • Make sure your ORCID account is current (correct email address, updated affiliations, add any name variations)
  • Use your ORCID iD when submitting a paper to a journal
  • Authorize CrossRef and DataCite to update your ORCID record automatically
Automatically link your published works
